Note: A foreign gene is introduced into the genetic makeup of an animal (usually mouse or rat). The gene of interest is first isolated, and designed so it carries specific DNA fragment, then injected into a fertilized egg. The method is as follows:
Inject estrogen in a female mouse to encourage the production of large amount of mature eggs; fertilize the female mouse with a male; collect the eggs and inject the plasmid (I ASSUME THAT'S WHAT YOU USE) containing the gene of interest before mitosis occurs; the fertilized eggs are transplanted into the body of another female mouse, where they are allowed to grow.
In some of the fertilized eggs, the plasmids would insert themselves at a random site of a chromosome, thus becoming part of the DNA makeup of a mouse cell. Mice developed from this kind of egg will carry the gene of interest and thus become a transfected animal.
